Sticky Earth Ceramics

Rafal is the Melbourne potter behind Sticky Earth Ceramics.

Originally hailing from Krakow, Poland, Rafal now works from a studio in Melbourne’s west.

His pottery features earthy tones of natural clay and a minimalist aesthetic. Glazes are applied with a light touch to allow the natural textures of clay to come through.

By bringing out the warmth and rawness of natural stoneware clay, Rafal gives each and every piece its own authentic character.

Snakebird Designs

The pieces here are largely functional- to me there is something very special about a handmade object making its way into your daily routine. Interacting with handmade ceramics offers me a moment of mindfulness (I'm sorry, ignore the buzzword) and gives me a reason to stop scrolling through rubbish on my phone and instead enjoy the tactility of the clay- imagining the hard work that was put into it's existence, enjoying the imperfections, and picturing it's journey from a blob of dirt to vitrifying for hours in a kiln chamber at 1280 degrees celcius. It's pretty neat! I hope you get that same excitement from my work. I mean, it beats the shit out of IKEA...

I prefer to use modest glazes that show off the texture and natural properties of the clay, and my real joy comes from making things the way I like them, when I can't already find them out in the world.

I use both my noisy, secondhand potters wheel and handbuilding techniques (mainly slab building and pinching) to achieve different effects. I'm constantly searching for new, more efficient methods and striving for clean, simple design.

All of the items sold through Snakebird Designs are slowly and lovingly handmade in my sharehouse shed/studio in Yarraville, in Melbourne/Naarm, Australia.

Joanne Linsdell Art

Joanne Linsdell is an artist working across a range of mediums, using imagery and material to explore avenues of connection to people and place.

In response to observations and immersion in the physical, natural and social environment surrounding her, Linsdell uses her drawings and ceramic practice to make connections.

Growing up in rural Victoria, playing and working on the family orchard; Linsdell has returned to this property in Bacchus Marsh to create an art studio in a large disused packing shed.

Through her drawings, Linsdell is cataloguing a large garden and creating objects inspired by those left behind after the cease of production as a starting point for her art works.

Donaldstreet Ceramics

Each piece you buy from Donaldstreet is an original, unique piece of art. I make the ceramic women from weeny coils of stoneware or porcelain clay. The unpainted, undecorated form suggests the woman's character to me and she evolves naturally into a finished piece.

All items are gift wrapped.

I’m trying very hard to reduce my carbon footprint and eliminate any plastic from the parcels I send, including tapes.

Donaldstreet_Ceramics is on Instagram, too.

CassarClay

I am a studio based artist living in Melbourne Australia.

Clay is my medium.  It is the sensuous quality of raw clay from the earth that inspires me as I work to mould it into a form that is organic tactile yet functional.

I create wheel-thrown ceramic dinnerware and decorative pieces for home décor.  I take a minimalist approach to my work, using different clay mixtures and studio developed glaze combinations.  This allows me to focus on the natural textures and tactile beauty of the clay, giving each piece its one-of-a-kind character.  Each body of work is designed to be used every day within the home.

I am an inveterate traveller.  I grew up on the island of Malta, in the Mediterranean.  I moved to Australia as a young adult and fell in love with the rugged beauty of the Australian bush and the multicultural character of the city of Melbourne.  For the last decade, I’ve travelled between Australia, Europe and the USA, and I worked in different potters’ studios and attended workshops and residences run by expert potters. I love visiting archaeological museums in order to learn from the artisans of antiquity. Travel continues to provide the best opportunity for reflection and gaining alternate perspectives on my work.
